When can I buy Cosmic Crisp^® apples in stores?

Cosmic Crisp^® apples are sold out for 2024. As our trees are still reaching maturity, we only had limited volumes available for this season. We are now working on our next crop, which you will be able to find in store from July 2025. Volumes are expected to increase significantly as more trees reach maturity over the next few years, so you should be able to enjoy extended availability in future.

What do Cosmic Crisp^® apples taste like?

The flavour of the Cosmic Crisp® apple offers the perfect balance of sweet and tart. They’re also exceptionally juicy and incredibly slow to brown, making them ideal for snacking, slicing, lunchboxes, baking, cooking, juicing, or any other way you enjoy apples. We named it Cosmic CRISP^® for a reason — just one crunchy bite and you’ll see why!

What’s the best way to store Cosmic Crisp^® apples so they stay fresh?

To preserve their freshness, flavour, and texture, Cosmic Crisp^® apples should be stored in your fridge. When stored correctly, they tend to last longer than other apple varieties.

What makes the Cosmic Crisp^® apple naturally slow to brown?

Cosmic Crisp^® apples are cultivated to have naturally higher levels of sugar and acidity, which helps them resist oxidation and makes them incredibly slow to brown. This makes them excellent for chopping and slicing, whether for entertaining or packing in lunch boxes!

Why is there a sticker on Cosmic Crisp^® apples?

Every Cosmic Crisp^® apple is labelled with a PLU (price look-up) sticker. This confirms it has met our rigorous quality standards and enables accurate tracking of the fruit.

Is there wax on Cosmic Crisp^® apples?

We believe in delivering fresh fruit with minimal steps from tree to table, ensuring you receive the best quality, freshness, and flavour. Wax on apples became popular in Australia because it made the apples look more appealing; but the natural lustre of Cosmic Crisp^® apples, combined with our washing and brushing process, also produces a lovely gloss. While we don’t add wax to the Cosmic Crisp^® apples we supply to Australia’s major supermarkets, on occasion wax may be added by request to apples sold through some greengrocers.

Can I grow my own Cosmic Crisp^® trees from an apple seed?

The answer to this question is both yes and no. Yes, you can plant a seed from a Cosmic Crisp^® apple and grow an apple tree, but the resulting fruit will not be identical to the Cosmic Crisp^® apples you buy at the store. The Cosmic Crisp^® is the result of over 20 years of selective breeding, and commercial orchards typically grow these apples from rootstock, not seeds. Additionally, these trees require a pollinator, making the process similar to genetics in humans — offspring might resemble one parent more than the other. So, while you might grow something similar to a Cosmic Crisp^®, it won’t be a true Cosmic Crisp^®.

Can I buy Cosmic Crisp^® apple trees to grow them at home?

WA 38 cv. trees which produce Cosmic Crisp® brand apples are only available for purchase by licensed commercial growers in Australia.

How are Cosmic Crisp^® apples grown?

Cosmic Crisp^® apples are orchard grown in the premier apple-growing regions of Yarra Valley (VIC), Batlow (NSW), and Manjimup (WA), where the distinct seasonal shifts intensify the apples’ vibrant colours, deep flavours, and firm texture. The cool climates of these regions extend the ripening period, allowing the apples to develop rich natural sugars and acidity. This process yields consistently high-quality Cosmic Crisp^® apples, ensuring that each piece of fruit is consistent and exceptional.

Are Cosmic Crisp^® apples GMO?

Cosmic Crisp^® apples are non-GMO. This variety, a hybrid of the Honeycrisp and Enterprise apples, was developed through traditional breeding methods over two decades at Washington State University’s esteemed treefruit breeding program.
